P187: Dose-Dependent Delay of Wallerian Degeneration Induced by Dexamethasone after Sciatic Nerve Transection in Rat
Wallerian degeneration is an innate immune response which occurs after some kinds of nerve damages such as neurodegenerative disease and acute axonal injury. In clinic, dexamethasone as an anti-inflammatory drug has been used for many years to treat nerve injuries. In present study, we aimed to study the effects of various doses of dexamethasone on the Wallerian degeneration in rat. Twentyseven ...
متن کاملKainic acid injections result in degeneration of cochlear nucleus cells innervated by the auditory nerve.
When kainic acid, a putative neurotoxin for neurons with glutamatergic input, is injected into the brainstem, it produces a selective pattern of degeneration in the cochlear nucleus. The rate and extent of degeneration is correlated with the distribution of the primary auditory fibers. This evidence supports the hypothesis that glutamate is the neurotransmitter for primary auditory fibers.
متن کاملPatterns of neural degeneration in the human cochlea and auditory nerve: implications for cochlear implantation.
Although the identity of all the variables that may influence speech recognition after cochlear implantation is unknown, the degree of preservation of spiral ganglion cells is generally considered to be of primary importance. A series of experiments in our laboratories, directed at quantification of surviving spiral ganglion cells in the profoundly deaf, evaluation of the predictive value of a ...
متن کاملTemporary Neurotrophin Treatment Prevents Deafness-Induced Auditory Nerve Degeneration and Preserves Function.
After substantial loss of cochlear hair cells, exogenous neurotrophins prevent degeneration of the auditory nerve. Because cochlear implantation, the current therapy for profound sensorineural hearing loss, depends on a functional nerve, application of neurotrophins is being investigated. We addressed two questions important for fundamental insight into the effects of exogenous neurotrophins on...
متن کاملExperimental Meningococcal Sepsis in Congenic Transgenic Mice Expressing Human Transferrin
Severe meningococcal sepsis is still of high morbidity and mortality. Its management may be improved by an experimental model allowing better understanding of its pathophysiology. We developed an animal model of meningococcal sepsis in transgenic BALB/c mice expressing human transferrin. We studied experimental meningococcal sepsis in congenic transgenic BALB/c mice expressing human transferrin...
